Ways to Implement Nutrition and Wellness


When enrolled at Harmony Recovery, clients will participate in nutrition and wellness education. Through this program, they will learn that exercising and eating well is not only a great way to maintain physical health, but also their mental health, too.

There is no doubt about it—addiction is a disease. In fact, it is defined as a chronic, relapsing disease of the brain. This does not mean that someone addicted to drugs and/or alcohol cannot find ways to manage this specific disease. For many, one of the ways in which addiction can be managed is through building a strong foundation of good eating.

Food is how we fuel our bodies, and in turn, our minds. Putting food into our bodies should be viewed as a way to uphold our overall wellness. Therefore, individuals at Harmony Recovery will spend time not only eating better while in our care but learning how certain foods and behaviors surrounding food can positively impact their lives.

For example, someone who is grappling with depression might view food, along with drugs and/or alcohol, as a means of coping. When in treatment, therapists can work with that individual to not only help them iron out his or her behaviors surrounding food but also to inform him or her of ways to implement good nutrition into their lives. This is simply just one example of how we at Harmony Recovery provide education about nutrition and wellness. We also encourage the following in relation to a proper diet:

  • Scheduling time for breakfast, lunch, and dinner
  • Offering healthy snacks throughout campus
  • Utilizing individual therapy as a space to discuss eating habits
  • Informing clients of the benefits of eating well

Nutritional wellness can be addressed further in individual and group therapy sessions, where a client can dig deeper into his or her relationship with food and/or his or her neglect of his or her wellbeing to help rectify negative behaviors.


From looking at it as the big picture, wellness encompasses several different aspects of one’s overall being. To be well, it is important to eat healthly, exercise, have positive social interactions, engage in activities that produce enjoyment, etc. And while that might seem simple, many people who are fresh out of active addiction can struggle with developing a way of life that promotes wellness.

At Harmony Recovery, we not only focus on a healthy diet (as previously described), but we also focus on helping individuals heal from the inside out. We do this by helping clients incorporate exercise, mindfulness, education, and specified counseling into their treatment program.

One thing that many people who are in recovery do is exercise. Whether it is by walking around the campus, going to the campus gym, or participating in physical activities, several people at Harmony Recovery utilize exercise as a go-to in their recovery. Exercise is extremely beneficial because as an individual gets moving, his or her body begins to release dopamine, which is a neurotransmitter that sends reward signals to the brain, which in turn, causes an individual to feel happy and satisfied.

Mindfulness is also an excellent form of wellness practice, as it allows individuals to stay in the present moment. More times than not, those recovering from addiction find themselves caught up in their thoughts and emotions. However, by applying mindfulness techniques to their everyday lives, they can remain in the present and relax their minds in ways that promote stress reduction and peace.

Other ways to include wellness in one’s recovery is by participating in group activities, spending time outdoors, and getting enough rest.
